Rochdalians' glory in Wray Cup final
Rochdale Observer
|April 23, 2025
WEST Didsbury and Chorlton FC were once again excellent hosts both on and off the field as they hosted the Wray Cup final.
The competition was first played for in 1928 when appropriately the winners were West Didsbury.
The competition now features teams in divisions two and three and making the final were Rochdalians and Stretford Paddock Amateurs.
History was made as it was the first-ever cup final in the league to have a lady referee, Nicola Mtetwa who has enjoyed an excellent season in the L and C.
She was joined by assistant referees Laura Marler and Mike Crump with Emanuel Ankrah as fourth official and they won deserved praise for their excellent handling of competitive game played in good spirit.
Another first with the fixture was the league's support of a local charity Francis House who were in attendance raising funds for their cause.
The game had a contrast in the teams with Rochdalians fielding a strong and experienced team against a young and lively Stretford Paddock team.
Rochdalians took an early lead with stunning 25-yarder from Declan Barry on 11 minutes.
The teams were evenly matched until the break without being able to convert the many chances they created.
