Women in police force: 90% serving in junior ranks, says report

India’s police force has less than 1,000 women in senior positions like Directors Generals and Superintendents of Police, with 90 per cent of all women in policing serving in constable ranks, according to a new report.

The India Justice Report (IJR) 2025, initiated by Tata Trusts and supported by several other organisations and data partners, tracked the large and nuanced gender diversity in state police forces across four areas: Judiciary, Prisons, and Legal Aid.
