Cognition means the ability to know, understand, think, remember, and make decisions.

It may seem like a purely human quality, but its roots go much deeper into biology. The journey from a single living cell to full human consciousness is both a scientific and philosophical story. It demonstrates how simple biological processes can evolve into cognition, thought, and even spirituality.

The simplest form of life starts with a single cell. It is not able to "think" like a human being, but it is able to sense its surroundings, react to changes, and even learn to survive. For example, cells will move toward food and away from threats. They are able to process information and even make decisions. In this way, even a single cell demonstrates a form of intelligence. As life forms become more complex, specialized cells called “neurons” appear. These cells are able to work together to process information.

In our brains, there are billions of cells, called "neurons," that work together to process information. When we learn something new, our connections are strengthened. This biological process explains how experiences shape the brain. However, even though science can describe how the brain works, it still struggles to explain how physical brain activity produces subjective experience-like the feeling of happiness, the color red, or the pain of loss. This unanswered question is often called the "hard problem" of consciousness.

Philosophers have given a variety of explanations for this enigma. Some have suggested that consciousness is simply a product of the complexity of the brain.
