Major General Robin Lindsay himself a Black Watch officer - addressed Highland veterans, dignitaries and local townspeople at the clifftop memorial, speaking of the importance of commemoration and the deep friendship that grew from adversity exactly 85 years ago.

"For those in the Scottish infantry, the name of St Valery has a powerful and iconic place in our hearts," he said.
