Grit bin provision secured after community outcry

A decision to maintain the provision of grit bins in some of Renfrewshire's most remote communities has been dubbed a victory for "common sense".

Renfrewshire councillors this week agreed to halt plans to remove residential grit bins at dozens of locations while also reinstating some that have already been removed.

The local authority had revealed plans to reduce the number of bins as part of a memo shared with elected members last week.

While all of Renfrewshire was affected by the cull, it specifically would have seen the number in Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch cut by more than half.

But in a meeting of the infrastructure, land and environment policy board, council leader Iain Nicolson proposed an amendment to the meeting which called for the review of grit bin provision to recommence to include a thorough consultation with communities.

The addition - which included a request that the issue be brought back before the board - was greed by all members.
