Fines for drivers who park on pavements in East Renfrewshire will be issued from April next year.

- DREW SANDELANDS, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Penalty charge notices of £100 - reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days - will be given to vehicles parked on the pavement on most streets in the area.

However, 24 streets are set to be exempt while the legislation has been deemed to be "non-applicable" to another 266.

Warning notices will be issued between January and the end of March to help drivers adjust to the changes.

In a report, council officials said: "The enforcement of pavement parking prohibition is intended to improve accessibility and safety for everyone that uses pavements, and to help support and encourage active travel.

"It is acknowledged that there may be challenges with a significant increase in vehicles moving from parking on pavements to parking on the road.

"Monitoring of the network will be undertaken following the introduction of enforcement measures to manage the safe and free flow of traffic."
