Disability hate crime thrives in the region

There is a worrying increase in disability hate crime in Renfrewshire, a local charity has warned.

The team at Shopmobility are determined to stamp out hatred

Shopmobility Renfrewshire raised the alarm as part of its efforts to eradicate discrimination during National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

The charity, which leases wheelchairs and mobility scooters to people in Paisley town centre, said it has seen increased reports in hate crimes amongst its customers.

Tommy Higgins, safety director of Shopmobility Renfrewshire, told the Paisley Daily Express: “This week provides an important opportunity to stand together against hatred, prejudice and discrimination in all their forms.

“Shopmobility Renfrewshire has noticed in recent months more members have complained about abusive and even threatening comments being made to them when using our mobility scooters.
