Woman consumes poison inside PS alleging inaction

A woman allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison inside the Itamati police station in Nayagarh district Monday morning, protesting what she described as police inaction in a cheating case against her lover.

‘The woman was admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Nayagarh in critical condition. Doctors initially considered referring her to a Bhubaneswar facility but later said her condition had stabilised and was under control. Tehsildar Rakesh Swain also reached the hospital and recorded the woman’s statement in the presence of a magistrate.

The incident drew significant public attention and sparked tension in Itamati area. It also raised questions over handling of sensitive cases involving survivors of abuse by the local police.

According to reports, the accused Alok Swain, son of a CRPF jawan from Saradhapur village, allegedly established a physical relationship with the woman under a false promise of marriage. When he later refused to marry her, the woman lodged a complaint at the Itamati police station.
