State re-introduces fail system for Class V, VIII

Allowing schools to hold back students if they do not meet the required academic standards, the state government has reintroduced the 'pass-fail system' in Class V and VIII annual examinations from the current academic year, an official notification said Wednesday.

Aiming to ensure that foundational learning levels are achieved before students are promoted to higher classes, the state government has done away with automatic promotion in primary schools and restored the 'pass-fail' system for Class V and VIII students in a major shift in elementary education policy.
