Modi to Trump: No US role in ceasefire

On a day when President Trump was set to host Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir for lunch, tensions flared diplomatically as Prime Minister Modi firmly rejected Trump's repeated claims of mediating peace between India and Pakistan, which did little to budge the US President.

In a 35-minute phone call, Modi made it clear to Trump that the ceasefire followed direct military talks initiated by Pakistan, with zero US involvement. He emphasised that India “will never accept mediation,” underlining a national consensus on this stance. However, hours later, Trump, speaking to reporters, reiterated his version, claiming he “stopped a war” and received little credit for it. While New Delhi has been maintaining that India’s fierce counter-attack forced Pakistan to plead for ending the hostilities, Trump has repeated over a dozen times that he “helped settle” the tensions between the two nuclear capable nations.
