Panic gripped thousands of people across several blocks in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Jajpur districts as two major rivers in northern Odisha are in spate following days of relentless rainfall.

Several villages in Bhograi and Baliapal blocks of Balasore district were cut off from the outside world after floodwaters from Subarnarekha and Jalaka rivers inundated low-lying areas Sunday. Baitarani river was flowing above the danger mark at Akhuapada, sparking further alarm among residents in parts of Jajpur and Bhadrak districts. Meanwhile, landslides were also reported from Keonjhar district leading to traffic snarls on NH-49.

Reports said heavy discharge of rainwater from 13 gates of Galudihi dam in Jharkhand has triggered floods in Subarnarekha river for the sixth time this monsoon.

At Rajghat gauge station, the water level rose above the danger mark of 10.36 metres by 7am Sunday and continued to rise. By 8pm, it had reached 11.20 metres, officials said.
