Breaking myths, taboos around menstruation
Orissa POST
|May 28, 2025
As the world marks Menstrual Hygiene Day May 28, health experts, advocates, and social workers in Bhubaneswar are joining hands to break myths and taboos surrounding menstruation, including the stigma around sex during periods.
This year’s theme, “Together for #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” focuses on spreading awareness and empowering women through accurate information on menstrual health.
Harpreet Kaur, Senior Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Manipal Hospitals, Bhubaneswar, emphasised the importance of busting menstrual myths. “A widespread misconception is that menstrual blood is ‘impure’—which is completely untrue. Menstruation is a natural biological process,” she said. “Another harmful belief is that women should avoid exercise during menstruation, when in fact, physical activity can ease cramps and discomfort,” she explained.
