The Union Cabinet has cleared ₹11,718 crore for the first-ever digital census, marking a major technological shift in India's 16th decadal population count.

About 30 lakh enumerators will collect micro-level household data through mobile apps, supported by a new Census Management & Monitoring System. The 2027 Census will also include caste enumeration for the first time. Despite being long delayed from 2021 due to the pandemic, the government is finally moving ahead with this mammoth crucial exercise

The Union Cabinet Friday approved ₹11,718 crore for conducting the Census of India, 2027, which would include the caste enumeration for the first time.
