Why city's only 100 per cent vegan pub is abandoning food

THE wider choice of vegan options in chain restaurants has impacted Nottingham's only 100 per cent vegan pub, which has announced it will be scrapping food.

Giving drinkers the chance to eat can significantly boost profits, but the bosses of the Golden Fleece say most of its profits come from the sale of beer, spirits, wine and cocktails.

Last month, the Mansfield Road pub announced the kitchen would be closing on August 31 to safeguard jobs and the future of the venue.

General manager Robbi Gwyther said: “Dining out, it’s becoming more popular with bigger chains and brands having vegan options, which they never used to have.

“You'd go in somewhere and try and order some food and you could have two options, but now you can have a big range of options.

“It's driving a lot of vegans not to focus on a fully vegan brand any more. I do find a lot of vegans go out for food with their friends, who aren't vegans, and a lot of people who eat meat won't go to a fully vegan place.
