The Lionesses began well, with Russo getting free down the right and her low effort was parried away into the path of James but the forward seemed to lose her footing and couldn’t latch onto the ball.

At the other end, Esther Gonzalez picked the ball up wide on the left under pressure from Carter. But she managed to wriggle away and get a shot off but keeper Hampton was out to block.

There was a great chance for England in the 19th minute when pressure allowed Lauren Hemp to charge down a loose pass from the Spanish back line.
