‘Pop-up’ before long-awaited library building finally opens?

The old library in Spondon Street was declared unfit for purpose in 2017, and Nottingham City Council sold the site to a local developer, Hockley Developments, to build a new one.

But problems first became apparent after Nottingham-based previous contractor Dako Construction collapsed into administration at the start of 2023.

A new contractor was found and the new building was handed back to the council at the end of 2023 for final fit-out - but its opening has been delayed ever since.

A summer opening last year was called off after the discovery of problems with the building, which are yet to be rectified.

The council’s leader has now touted an opening date of summer 202 - two years later than originally planned - for the opening of the library.
