Paterson: I don't pretend to have skill sets I don't have

NOTTS County's new head coach Martin Paterson admitted he is not a data whizz but it is something he will have to get used to with the Magpies.

The 38-year-old will also have to get used to explaining his decisions on a much more regular basis than other coaches to the club's board, as he forms part of a new “technical committee” that has been created at Meadow Lane.

Data does not come into Paterson’s thought process as a coach but it is a big part of what Notts do. The owners, the Reedtz brothers, own a football analytics company, which provides bespoke data for the club.

County have taken a calculated risk in appointing Paterson, who has coaching experience but very little as the lead man in the dugout, outside of a short spell at the helm of Burton Albion.

“If you ask me about data, I wouldn’t be able to give you an answer that makes sense because I don’t deal with the data - I don’t understand it,” Paterson told BBC Sport.
