Mayor hammers town eyesore

THE longanticipated demolition of a Long Eaton “eyesore” has begun, with Erewash's new mayor taking a sledge-hammer to the building before a £25million regeneration scheme gets under way.

Councillor Harry Atkinson was joined by Richard Ledger, chairman of the Long Eaton Town Deal Board, before heavy machinery began levelling the derelict Galaxy cinema site.

The Derby Road cinema closed more than a decade ago and is making way for commercial premises.

Demolition is set to take four months and will be managed to avoid disruptions, according to the council.
