THE troubled Nottinghamshire NHS trust which missed opportunities to stop killer Valdo Calocane has claimed improvements have made the public safer - but the father of one of his victims has said it is "too little, too late".

Father says NHS trust improvements are just 'too little, too late'

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which provides mental healthcare across the region, had cared for paranoid schizophrenic Calocane before he stabbed three people to death and attempted to run over three others in Nottingham on June 13, 2023.

The families of 19-year-old students Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, have heavily criticised how it treated and then discharged Calocane before his spree.

A report from watchdog the Care Quality Commission found there had been "errors, omissions, and misjudgements" in his treatment and an independent NHS-commissioned review found the risk Calocane posed to the public was not properly considered.

Chief executive Ifti Majid, speaking at the trust's board meeting on Thursday, said: "I believe our patients and the public are safer today due to the changes we've made to our discharge and risk management processes and the work we are doing to listen and engage better with patients, families, our colleagues, and local partners."
