BRIT FALLS SHORT OF QUARTER-FINALS AT NOTTINGHAM OPEN

RYAN PENISTON fell to a second round defeat at the hands of Emilio Nava at the LTA's Lexus Nottingham Open.

The British wildcard knocked out former world number 56 Daniel Elahi Galan in the opening round but there was no such joy for him against Nava as he fell 7-6(5), 6-4 in an hour and 46 minutes.

The Essex star had the chance to serve for the opening set at 5-4, only for Nava to break back to love and the American quickly seized on the momentum, only losing three points behind his first serve in the second set to secure his place in the quarter-finals.

There, he will face compatriot Colton Smith, fresh off a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 success over Australian qualifier James McCabe.

Joining Nava and Smith in the last eight are Shintaro Mochizuki and second seed Marin Cilic.
