IIT to open first foreign campus in Zanzibar; classes begin this October

The Tanzanian province of Zanzibar will host the first foreign campus of the premier Indian Institute of Technology, in a move that the ministry of external affairs said was set to burnish India’s credentials in South-South cooperation.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up a campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar was signed on 5 July between the two ministries of education and IIT Madras in the presence of Zanzibar president Hussein Ali Mwinyi and external affairs minister S. Jaishankar.
The plan is for India to bring in its expertise for the education and skilling of Tanzanian students.
The academic programme and curricula will be designed by IIT Madras while the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania will meet capital and operating expenditure for the new campus.
Degrees from IIT Madras will be awarded to students of this new campus. The two sides expected programmes to be launched by October.
For India, this development serves several key goals.
