SC asks Delhi HC to fast-track Sharjeel Imam's bail plea
Millennium Post Delhi
|New Delhi 26October2024
The Supreme Court on Friday declined to entertain a bail plea filed by Sharjeel Imam, accused in a terror case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.
-
However, it directed the Delhi High Court to expedite its hearing of the plea, which has been pending since 2022.
The decision was made by a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and S C Sharma, who noted that they were not inclined to entertain the application under Article 32 of the Constitution. Instead, they left the door open for Imam to request an expedited hearing from the high court.
Imam's counsel, senior advocate Siddhartha Dave, said the bail plea had been pending since 2022 while clarifying he was not pressing for bail at the present stage.
