Rahul Gandhi records dissent as PM-led panel meet to select CIC

The three member committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to select the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) met in the Capital on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

The meeting, which lasted nearly 90 minutes, is learnt to have decided on the appointment of the CIC and eight Information Commissioners, with Gandhi submitting a dissent note.

Sources said the Leader of Opposition sought more details of the appointees and is learnt to have questioned the criteria adopted for the selection of the Chief Information Commissioner and the eight other Information Commissioners. Gandhi, the lone Opposition nominee, is said to have pointed to the absence of names in the shortlists from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), and minority communities.
