Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open a ten-hour debate in the Lok Sabha on Monday to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, setting the stage for an extensive review of the national song's origins, evolution and contested legacy.
The discussion, listed as a key item on the day's agenda, is part of a yearlong national commemoration launched on November 7 to engage youth and students with the poem written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and set to tune by Jadunath Bhattacharya. Officials said the session is expected to bring forward "many important and unknown facets" about the song.
