Rs 1,600 crore for Punjab, Rs 1,500 crore for Himachal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced substantial financial aid and relief measures for Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, both reeling under severe floods and landslides. His visits to the states aimed to assess the damage firsthand and review relief operations.
In Punjab, facing its worst deluge since 1988, Modi announced Rs 1,600 crore in addition to the Rs 12,000 crore already available to the state. The floods have claimed 52 lives and damaged crops on 1.91 lakh hectares. "Conducted an aerial review of the floods in Punjab. Authorities are working round-the-clock, assisting those impacted. Our thoughts are with the people in this challenging time," Modi said on X.
Modi surveyed the worst-affected districts, including Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, and Pathankot. He chaired a meeting in Gurdaspur with officials, elected representatives, and key authorities. Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, -Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian, and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu attended, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was hospitalised.
