India rises to 9th spot globally in forest area

India has climbed one place to secure the ninth position globally in total forest area and has maintained its third rank in annual forest area gain, according to the latest Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Bali.

The report attributes India's performance to extensive afforestation efforts and sustained community participation. The Environment Ministry described the achievement as a reflection of the country's success in largescale plantation and forest protection programmes under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
