Cabinet approves 10,023 new medical seats in govt colleges

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved two major schemes aimed at expanding the capacity of government medical colleges across India, paving the way for an increase of more than 10,000 seats in undergraduate and postgraduate courses by 2028-29.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, announcing the decision, said the Cabinet had cleared Phase-III of the scheme to strengthen and upgrade central and state government medical colleges, which will add 5,000 postgraduate (PG) seats. Alongside, the government also approved the continuation of the scheme for enhancing undergraduate capacity, targeting 5,023 additional MBBS seats. The latter comes with an enhanced cost ceiling of Rs 1.50 crore per seat.
