Apex Court asks Centre to frame national policy, uniform rules on organ transplantation
Millennium Post Delhi
|New Delhi 20November2025
The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Union government to prepare a national policy for organ donation and allocation that would apply uniformly across states, calling for a more transparent and efficient system.
The directions were issued by a bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran while hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation.
In its order, the bench asked the Centre to work with all states to create “model allocation criteria” and to set “uniform criteria for donors across the country” to eliminate variations in rules and eligibility. The proposed policy must also confront caste and gender disparities that continue to affect access to organ transplants.
