We are unprofitable servants

Jesus teaches the Apostles how to be true servants of God. As his servants, they should not expect anything in return after doing their jobs.

The master does not owe anything from them. In fact, when they obey his orders, they are doing a favor to themselves. They are privileged to prove to their master that they are responsible and worthy of trust. The Greek word for servant is doulos, and it can also mean slave. Slaves cannot just run away from their masters and serve another master.

Jesus is our master. We are his servants or slaves. We are God’s precious possessions. When we respond to his call to be more generous with our time and talent, to serve selflessly his other servants, we are just living out our vocation. The more we serve, the more we show our appreciation that we are just servants, not lords.
