In this digital age, if you want to learn how to cook your favorite dish, the easiest path for you is to search on YouTube, where you will be presented with a wide array of tutorials. At the end of the video, you will be asked to subscribe to or follow the channel, which is monitored by the platform. The creator is typically paid by the platform based on the number of followers or the number of times the material is viewed.

Digital content comes in many forms. They are intended to serve as sources of information, learning, entertainment, and channels for gaining fame quickly. In the age of smartphones and social media, stardom is no longer reserved for movie stars or TV personalities. Today, a Filipino with a ring light, a decent camera, and a knack for storytelling can become a household name.

Our daily digital landscape is now a vibrant ecosystem populated by vloggers, influencers, and content creators who have become the new celebrities and trendsetters. They have carved out a significant space in our culture, shaping opinions, driving consumer behavior, and, most crucially, capturing our attention. But beyond the perfectly curated feeds and viral videos lies a complex reality of income streams and societal impact, both positive and negative. Today, there is a growing debate about the need for regulation: Are they helping society, or harming it in the pursuit of likes and views?

For many Filipino digital creators, their online presence has become a viable career path. Monetization strategies are diverse and often intertwined. Companies pay influencers to promote products, often through Instagram posts, TikTok videos, or YouTube integrations. Advertising revenue from these platforms, where creators earn a portion of the money generated from ads displayed on their videos, remains a primary source. They usually also pay creators based on the number of views and watch time. A viral video can earn tens of thousands of pesos.

Reservists: Quiet guardians of national defense

Every September, National Reservist Week gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and recognize a quiet yet indispensable force that safeguards our nation: the reservists of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Often, they stand outside the limelight, far from the public's daily consciousness. Yet, during times of crisis-whether national security challenges or natural disasters-it is the reservists who embody the essence of citizen-soldiers: ordinary men and women ready to serve when duty calls.
