Substance over spectacle

In my 21 years of public service, I have learned that there are essentially two types of personalities in politics.

There are those who love to talk and grandstand, and revel in the spotlight. And there are those who are humble, quiet and steadfast. Let me be very clear: I am not suggesting that one is more hardworking than the other. I think it is a matter of personality and style, if I may refer to it as such. I believe that the bombastic type of public servant has a place in an arena where communications and rhetoric play important roles. Surely, when the times call for it, a leader must be able to appeal to the emotions of people in order to inspire them or rally them around a common goal.
