No new virus but flu positivity rate in NCR rises to 42%
Manila Bulletin
|October 21, 2025
The Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) reported that the positivity rate for influenza, or flu, in Metro Manila has increased to 42 percent in October, indicating ongoing community transmission in the region.
But the Department of Health (DOH) clarified that there is no new or unusual virus or strain circulating in the country, stressing that the recent uptick in respiratory cases is due to the seasonal flu.
This came as the Quezon Provincial Government ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks in all indoor areas and outdoor spaces where physical distancing cannot be maintained, citing a rise in respiratory illnesses such as cough, colds, and pneumonia.
The DOH on Monday also reported a 39-percent decline in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in the first two weeks of October compared to the last two weeks of September, but reminded the public to remain vigilant as the country continues to experience its usual flu season.
