Cops investigated over 'comments recorded on phone'

Multiple police and council sources have told the M.E.N. that an inquiry was triggered after a person was arrested in the town and their phone taken off them. It is claimed comments allegedly made by officers about a colleague were captured on the device.

An investigation began in December 2023 and the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, has yet to publish the findings and recommendations of its inquiry. The officers remain suspended.

The allegations stem from alleged 'canteen banter'. The subject of their comments was not present or aware of what was said. The IOPC is taking the lead on the inquiry.
