Why prison officer is the ideal job for military veterans

AS Remembrance Day was marked at HMP Gartree, in Market Harborough, yesterday, the moment was especially poignant for two prison officers.

Jimmy McMillan and Jim Mortimer both served in the armed forces and are encouraging other military leavers to follow their career path.

Jimmy, a custodial manager at HMP Gartree, served in the Parachute Regiment for seven years, seeing active service in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Sierra Leone. He has worked for the Prison Service for nearly 22 years.

Jim, 31, served in the Royal Marines from 2012 to 2019 with 45 Commando and 43 Commando, participating in anti-piracy operations and deployments worldwide.

After leaving the military, he worked in private security before joining HM Prison and Probation Service.
