Final road closures for town bypass are announced

A FRESH round of road closures has been lined up as work on a major town bypass scheme nears completion.

The Melton Mowbray Distributor Road is intended to divert traffic from the busy town centre and accommodate the extra vehicles resulting from housing developments.

At nearly 4.5 miles, the road is the biggest highways project carried out by Leicestershire County Council.

It is expected to be completed later this year, with an estimated cost to the authority of about £130 million, with the government putting up about £50 million of that.

The work to date has included a number of disruptions for drivers around Melton to allow the route, and the roundabouts and bridges scattered along it, to be constructed.
