Back in the early days of the National Lottery, when prizes were bigger, tickets were cheaper and people occasionally won, there was a nationwide buzz of excitement when someone landed the jackpot.

The lucky winner's golden ticket was accompanied by a hue and cry from journalists which only increased if they chose to retain their anonymity.

The news someone had copped the lot but exercised their right to remain in the shadows would prompt a manhunt to track them down and unmask their good fortune for all to see.

This was, of course, long before Lord Leveson cast his eye over the newspaper world.
