Councillor sidelined for indie change

A councillor was suspended by Labour two years after effectively becoming an independent, it has emerged.

Cllr John McGhee, the Depute Provost of East Ayrshire, was officially suspended by the party in October 2024 after effectively sitting as an independent councillor since the previous council election in May 2022.

First elected to the council in the former Kilmaurs and Stewarton South ward in 2003, Cllr McGhee has represented Annick since 2007 and sat as a Labour councillor for more than 20 years.
