Simon Harris and Fine Gael swiftly decided the moral is that they need to shift along the political spectrum towards the right on immigration.

They may find themselves jockeying for space there with a future Jim O'Callaghan-led Fianna Fail and a new 'common sense' Sinn Fein strategy of telling people what they want to hear on asylum hotels setting up in their towns.

It makes sense for FF to try and woo back some of its former conservative base, which is now scattered to its right supporting the likes of Aontu and voting none of the above in the race for the Aras.
