But this time seven years ago one of the most pressing issues in the European Union was: should we keep winding the clocks backwards and forwards?

It was such a dilemma that the powers that be in Brussels embarked on the quaint notion of a Europe-wide plebiscite.

Everyone was invited to have their say.

Around five million did.

A large majority voted to do away with the whole mad business of throwing everyone's sleep rhythms up in a heap every six months.

Then, as happens in the messy ways of building a democratic consensus, there was a split between the 'Always Winter' faction, and the 'Summertime till We Die' brigade.

The change was parked. The great world turned, and suddenly European governments were consulting their populations about more urgent things like what to do if your nation is annexed by Russia.
