Shock in Sussex as pacemaker Qirat stuns favourite

PACEMAKER Qirat took the fast lane to stun racegoers at odds of 150-1 in the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes yesterday.

Job one for jockey Richard Kingscote at Goodwood was to go through the gears and set the race up for his short-priced Juddmonte ownermate Field Of Gold.

But the lover of riding motorbikes in his spare time sped away with the prize to cause one of the greatest upsets in racing history.

And it came just in time for Kingscote, who is poised to swap two wheels for more when he makes a career move to Hong Kong.

“It was very surreal)’ said the rider, reflecting on the moment when he realised he had exceeded expectations on the Ralph Beckett-trained winner.

“And not what we expected this morning but we will take it.
