Saharan dust heading our way

HEAVY rainfall and forecasts for another plume of Saharan dust could deposit red mud over Ireland amid new Status Yellow warnings.

The previously rare weather event, which has now occurred several times in recent years, means vehicles could be blanketed in coarse red sand-like dust.

The phenomenon that mixes desert dust with rain leads to showers looking red — and has been dubbed blood rain.
