NOT feeling so sharp after the summer break? Act now to protect your grey matter. Did you know that our brain starts changing 20 years before dementia symptoms appear? Here, he reveals top tips for protecting our brains and reducing the risk of dementia...

Carl says: “Regular social interaction supports wellbeing and helps prevent cognitive decline, as loneliness raises dementia risk to levels similar to smoking.

“With Gen Z reluctant to connect in today's online, polarised environment, maintaining meaningful relationships and engaging in community activities is key for all to safeguarding brain health for the years to come.”

MANAGE VASCULAR HEALTH

Carl says: “What's bad for your heart is bad for your brain. The second leading cause of dementia is vascular damage in the brain - not genetics or age.

“Vascular dementia accounts for 25% of cases but is largely preventable.

“Protect your brain by managing blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, and avoid smoking as it can double your risk of developing dementia. Limiting or abstaining from alcohol also helps reduce risk.”
