No choice..but we kids were better for it

IF you grew up in Ireland in the 70s and early 80s, you'll remember it well.

But talk about just having only one or two TV channels to a kid today and there's a chance they'll put you in the home for the bewildered.

Yours truly was feeling very old indeed, chatting with my nine-year-old about what it was like having just one TV channel when I was her age (we didn't get RTE2 until well after it launched in late 1978, as my dad didn't want to shell out for a new aerial).

A nine-year-old today has TV - with dozens of dedicated kids channels - plus streaming services like Netflix and Disney along with YouTube, TikTok and a million other places to see whatever the hell they want.
