Man, 27, dies in river swimming drown tragedy

GARDAI are treating the death of a young man who drowned in a Kerry river as a tragic accident.

Padraig O Rahilly, 27, from Killarney in Co Kerry, drowned on Tuesday in the town's River Flesk when he got into difficulty at around 3.30pm.

'Paudie' was removed from the water and emergency services fought to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A friend had raised the alarm as the tragedy unfolded by a stretch of the river behind houses in the Woodlawn area of the Kerry town.

Members of the public who were at a nearby soccer pitch provided assistance, before paramedics, the fire service, and a doctor attended the scene.

Tributes were paid last night to Paudie, who came from Killarney's Barraduff area.
