How can I change my VO2 Max? Sean: “Your VO2 is specific to your bodyweight. Someone who is overweight has a significantly higher risk of developing most causes of mortality. So, if you are leaner and lighter, your VO2 is going to be higher.

“Can you change your VO2? Absolutely. The lower your score originally, the bigger the growth can be.

“But in saying that, I had a really high-profile athlete in with us in March, he wasn't training the right way, he was overweight in my opinion in terms of what we wanted him to do, so we got him down about 10kg, changed the way he trained and he put a 20 percent increase on his VO2. It's all trainable.”

What's the highest VO2 Max ever measured?

Sean: “The highest ever in the world is a 96 - a cross-country skier. The highest I have ever tested is an 89.8 - someone who runs a 14-minute 5k.
