World mobilises to stop Iraq invasion

SOME 35 years ago today, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein sent forces to invade the oil-rich state of Kuwait, triggering the Gulf War.

The military takeover was met with international condemnation and resulted in immediate economic sanctions against Iraq.

But there was never any chance of US president of the day George Bush Snr leaving it at that.
