Mcllroy's Grand Slam win ended debate - he's the No.1 of all time by long stretch

- BY GARRY DOYLE

RORY MCILROY is Ireland's greatest ever sportsperson. There is no debating that now.

Pugilists may argue for Katie Taylor, Carl Frampton or Barry McGuigan, rugby people for Brian O'Driscoll, football fans for George Best, John Giles or Roy Keane, and there are strong cases for AP McCoy or Alex Higgins, too but McIlroy was having none of that as the shadows fell in Augusta last month. His Masters win was his best, most character-enhancing victory. Even if he had failed to add the iconic Green Jacket to his wardrobe, he would still have been one of golf's greatest ever players.

Remember he is the one who took on LIV, a man of high principle and high fades, who, at his best, doesn't appear to use a club but a wand.
