The upshot was the unusual sight of the Leinster back row turning to the face a touchline 50 metres away and cupping his hand to his ear as if looking for guidance. None came.

Then there was the midweek Lions squad announce-ment, in alphabetical order, having accepted he might be a knife-edge selection.
