FF: We did hire Yates to help with debates

FIANNA FAIL have confirmed that political commentator Ivan Yates provided interview and debate training for its presidential candidate Jim Gavin - in what has been called a ‘major scandal’ by Government critics.

Newstalk is conducting a review into the broadcaster after the Irish Independent revealed that he worked with the former Dublin GAA boss during his campaign.

Mr Yates covered for the station for three days during the presidential campaign, and didn't disclose “any conflict of interest”.

He also co-hosted Matt Cooper's podcast Path To Power, where the presidential election dominated conversation in recent months.

Mr Cooper has now cut professional ties with the broadcaster and former Fine Gael minister, saying he was “shocked” and ‘angry’.
