Family of man shot by gardai want inquest to have wider scope

LAWYERS for the family of man fatally wounded by gardai outside his home have called for his inquest to go beyond the specific events of that day.

The loved ones of George Nkencho want a broad examination of the circumstances of his death five years ago - including any knowledge gardai had about his mental health.

However, legal representatives of An Garda Siochana have urged the chief coroner for Dublin, Myra Cullinane, for the inquest to be confined to events which occurred in a 76-minute period before the shooting.

Mr Nkencho, 27, sustained fatal gunshot wounds during an incident involving members of the Garda Armed Support Unit at Manorfields Drive, Clonee, Co Dublin, on December 30, 2020.
